The new firmware update (2.71) offers the following:

The ability to download game demos directly off of the web browser to the memory stick.
Right now the only available demos are Loco Roco and Kazou (Sudoku game).

A new icon has also been added to the PSP interface, Portable TV (P-TV). With this new feature, PSP users can download video content from So-net (Sony's internet provider in Japan).
Some videos can be downloaded for free, others must be paid for.

There have also been some corrections made to the LocationFree Player option.
Previous problems with video output have now been fixed, video output is now correctly displayed.

Homebrew (nor the GTA exploit) will not work with firmware version 2.71. If you plan on using homebrew in the future, please do not update.

Certainly is continuing to improve, it's always been a very good idea using firmware, as the PSP doesn't get outdated that quick.
